Enormous trophy-size trout did not last to grow as big as they are by being stupid and outsmarting some of these big ones takes a special trout fishing technique. However, discovering which technique is successful on the water you are on during the season you are in will be determined by the trophy trout.
One trout fishing technique, which is great for beginners as well as those who want to catch fish, is trolling. This is done in a boat moving very slowly across a lake while dragging a line with attached lure behind it. Whether you use an electric trolling motor and small one or two horsepower gas engine or oars, the key to trolling is slow. Big fish are not going to expend any energy that is not necessary to catch a free meal.
They will rarely attack a meal that is swimming straight at a constant speed as it doesn’t seem to be in any trouble or to be offering itself as any easy lunch. A trout fishing technique has you vary trolling speeds slightly as well as direction. If you use an “S” pattern in trolling you’ll gain more movement from the lure than just direction.
When the lure is on the inside of the “S” it slows down and sinks lower in the water. On the outside, it speeds up and runs more shallow, even though the boat speed hasn’t changed. This trout fishing technique has the fish believing the lure may be in some distress and can’t swim straight, marking it as an easy meal.
Bigger Fish Require Bigger Differences
If this trout fishing technique hasn’t given you some better results, try the jerk and wait trout fishing technique. This is where you give a quick pull on the line, letting the lure slowly lower itself to the normal depth with little forward movement and then repeat. A trophy trout will recognize a smaller food item in trouble and will usually attack just as it starts its forward motion.
Most fish, especially trout, look for potential hiding places against predators and shade from the sun. Finding natural drop offs under the water may require a cheap depth finder, but pilings for docks and some man-made structures can offer both. By using your trout fishing technique around these areas you will probably find success.
However, whether trolling, casting and retrieving or floating flies down a river, the same trout fishing technique can be used for added catches.
